Annual Report 2007 of the Section Education and Research of the SSS

The Swiss Statistics Meeting was held in Lugano, and the section contributed by participating in the program committee and organizing a contributed papers session. Since the committee felt that the location of the meeting was rather remote for many members, the Autumn Seminar was organized independently from that event on Dec 8 in Berne, with contributions by
Marc Genton, Geneva;
Juan José Egozcue, Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña;
Tony Rossini, Novartis Basel; and
Christophe Croux, Leuven.

The speakers of spring seminar, which took place on May 11, 2007, were
Yanyuan Ma, Neuchâtel;
Yuedong Wangm UC Santa Barbara;
Nicola Sartori, Venezia; and
Markus Reiß, Heidelberg.
We thank Lutz Dümbgen for taking the responsability for these events, which form the main activity of the section.

Members of the committee represented the SSS with the Swiss Academy of Exact Sciences (scnat, www.scnat.ch). In the new structure of the Academy, the SSS belongs to the so-called platform MAP (mathematics - astronomy - physics). We also maintained contacts with the European Courses in Advanced Studies.

Due to other activities of committee members such as building master in statistics programs, the activity of the section was limited.
